Memory Foam vs Inflatable Travel Pillow: Which Is Better?

Published by FlyHugz. We make memory foam travel pillows, so we are not neutral, but we have tried to be fair to both.

Quick answer: memory foam is usually better for long flights, and inflatable is better for packing light. Foam gives steadier support and needs no setup. Inflatable pillows pack down very small and let you adjust the firmness.

Side by side

Memory foam Inflatable
Support Steady Depends on air
Comfort Soft and shaped Firmer, can feel slick
Pack size Bulkier Very small
Setup None Needs inflating
Risk Can trap some heat Can leak or lose air
Cleaning Wash the cover, wipe the foam Wipe by hand

When memory foam is the better pick

Choose foam for long-haul and overnight flights, or if you want to sleep upright. It keeps its shape for hours and does not depend on getting the air level right. Look for a removable, washable cover.

When inflatable is the better pick

Choose inflatable if you travel with one small bag, take short trips, or want to adjust the firmness. Do not overfill it: a slightly softer pillow sits better around your neck.

Shape matters too

Material is only half of it. Either type can come in an open U shape, which leaves the front of your neck unsupported. Read our comparison of U-shaped and wrap-around pillows for more.

Our take

We make the FlyHugz travel pillow in memory foam because long flights are what it is for. It rolls into its own travel bag, but an inflatable will always pack smaller. If bag space comes first, buy an inflatable.

Common questions

Is memory foam hot on a long flight?

Foam can hold some heat. A breathable cover helps, and cabins are often cool anyway.

Do inflatable pillows lose air?

They can, especially if the valve is not closed properly or the pillow gets punctured. Keep a little room for air to expand when you board.

How do I clean each one?
