Published by FlyHugz. We make a wrap-around travel pillow, so we are not neutral, but we have tried to be fair to both.
Quick answer: a wrap-around pillow supports your chin, and an open U shape does not. If your head drops forward when you sleep, a wrap-around pillow is usually the better choice. If it mostly falls to the side, a U shape can work, and it is simpler to wear.
Side by side
| U-shaped | Wrap-around | |
|---|---|---|
| Side support | Good | Good |
| Front support | None, unless turned around | Yes, holds the chin |
| Putting it on | Very easy | Fasten at the front |
| Fit | Usually fixed | Often adjustable |
| Warmth | Open at the front | Warmer |
When a U-shaped pillow makes sense
A U shape suits short naps, or people who lean against a window and need help at the sides. It slips on and off in a second. If you tend to nod forward, try turning it around so the thick part sits under your chin.
When a wrap-around pillow makes sense
A wrap-around pillow suits long flights and middle seats, where there is nothing to lean on. It closes at the front, so your head has support from every side. It takes a moment longer to put on, and some people find it warmer.
Our take
The FlyHugz travel pillow is a 360° memory foam wrap with an adjustable Velcro closure. The 2.0 Hooded Travel Pillow adds a hood to block cabin light. You can read how each one fits in our guide on how to use a travel pillow.
Common questions
Why does my head still fall forward with a neck pillow?
An open U shape has nothing at the front to stop it. Turn it around, or use a pillow that closes at the front.
Are wrap-around pillows too hot?
They cover more of your neck, so they can feel warmer. A breathable cover helps.
Which is easier to pack?
It depends on the material more than the shape. Look for one that comes with a bag or clips to your luggage. See our guide to travel pillow sizes.
